UPPAbaby Mesa V3

Quick verdict

Verdict
Caution
Evidence
Moderate

A premium seat with flame-retardant-free fabric, but BabyGearLab's January 2026 crash test put its head reading among the worst in the group.

  • Consumer Reports' Mesa rating is for the original Mesa (4-35 lb, older methodology), not the V3.

Product identity on record: 1003-MSA-US-JMS. Check the current product and version.

Caution
  • BabyGearLab crash metric 5.1/10: head reading "one of the worst in the group", chest "far worse than the average".
  • Belt installation 4.0/10 (BabyGearLab); Consumer Reports hasn't rated the V3.
Good
  • BabyGearLab ease of use 8.7/10; red-to-green tightness indicator and auto-retracting LATCH (UPPAbaby).
  • UPPAbaby states the fabric is free from flame-retardant chemicals (manufacturer claim).

What we could not verify

  • Consumer Reports has not rated the V3.
  • No chemical test located.
Why we reached this verdict

BabyGearLab crash tested this exact version in January 2026 and gave it a crash metric of 5.1 out of 10: the head reading was "still one of the worst in the group" and the chest reading "still far worse than the average". It scored well for ease of use (8.7) and for LATCH and baseless installation (7.5 each), but only 4.0 for belt installation.

We moved it from Recommended to Caution; the earlier page described that crash result only as a low but confirmed score. Consumer Reports' Mesa rating is for the original Mesa, a different seat. UPPAbaby states the fabric is free from flame-retardant chemicals and claims GREENGUARD Gold; PFAS isn't addressed.

Independent crash tests

Consumer Reports and BabyGearLab run their own crash tests with different equipment, methods and scales. Neither publishes raw measurements, so we report each result in the lab's own terms and never combine them. Passing the federal standard is required of every seat and is not a comparative result.

  • Auto-retracting LATCH (UPPAbaby)
  • Handle used in an anti-rebound position (UPPAbaby)
  • Built-in belt lock-off; European routing for baseless installs (UPPAbaby)

Features are as described by the manufacturer unless a lab is named. A feature's presence is not evidence of better crash performance on its own.

Federal compliance and recalls

Every seat sold in the US must meet FMVSS 213. The side-impact requirement, FMVSS 213a, applies from December 5, 2026. We did not find a side-impact (FMVSS 213a) statement on the manufacturer page we reviewed.

No recall of this seat was located in NHTSA's recall data (searched September 23, 2026).

Check your own seat by its model number and manufacture date at nhtsa.gov/recalls, and register it with the manufacturer so recall notices reach you.

Materials and chemical claims

  • “Fabric free from flame-retardant chemicals” (UPPAbaby, manufacturer statement)

Certifications claimed: GREENGUARD Gold (manufacturer-stated). GREENGUARD Gold limits chemical emissions (VOCs) into indoor air. It does not test for flame retardants or PFAS, and it says nothing about crash performance. We could not confirm this claim in UL's certification database, which blocks automated checks.

Flame-retardant claim only; PFAS is not addressed.

“Free of added flame retardants” means the manufacturer says none were added on purpose. It is not a lab result showing none are present, and no seat on this page has published independent chemical testing.

What would change our verdict

  • A second independent crash test showing materially better results.

  • Consumer Reports has not rated the V3.
  • No chemical test located.
