Editorial team and research process

The Verdict List is an independent publication. Every verdict is researched and reviewed under one byline, The Verdict List Editorial Team, so the work is credited to the publication and its published standard rather than to any one person. We do not publish author profiles, and we do not claim credentials we do not have.

What we do and do not do

We read, compare and report published evidence: regulatory records, court records, peer-reviewed studies, independent laboratory tests, certification listings, manufacturer disclosures and retail listings. We do not run a testing laboratory and we do not test products ourselves. Nothing here is medical advice. For a health concern, ask your pediatrician.

How we research a product

  1. We write the category standard first and publish it at the top of the category page, before any product is named. The full standard covers every category.
  2. We read the ingredient or materials list and check each item against public regulatory data, independent testing where it exists, and the peer-reviewed literature.
  3. We record the exact product: variant, size, region, SKU or model, and the package generation where it matters. A result for one size or generation is not a result for every product sold under the brand.
  4. We sort the product against the standard, publish the verdict with named, dated sources, and show the date we last reviewed it.

How we weigh sources

We weigh a source by what it can establish. Regulators, court records, peer-reviewed studies and independent laboratory testing carry more weight than sources with a commercial interest, such as manufacturer statements and retailer listings. A retailer listing can show what a product is called and whether it is sold. It cannot show what is in it.

Certifications are read narrowly. A certification tells you what the certifier checked, for which product and on which date. It does not show that a product is free of everything else.

Manufacturer claims and independent evidence

A manufacturer's statement is a claim, not a finding. We write "the manufacturer states" and we never present a claim as independent evidence. Where we looked for independent testing and did not find any, we say that independent evidence was not located. That is different from saying a product is fine, and different from saying it is not.

How we read testing

A non-detect means not detected above the method's reporting limit. It does not mean the substance is absent. We keep the method, units, sample and limits with every result. Screens for total or organic fluorine are different measurements from targeted PFAS tests, and we do not treat one as the other.

We keep hazard, exposure and risk apart. A material can be hazardous in principle and still not reach a child at a meaningful level in a finished product. We also keep allegations apart from findings: a lawsuit or a complaint is not a court finding.

How we show uncertainty

Each product page states our Verdict under the published category standard. Where qualifying independent evidence supports a rating, it also showsEvidence. Research confidence in a materials disclosure is a separate assessment and does not produce an Evidence rating. Exact formulation, SKU and generation questions appear in the product's verification notes and what we could not verify.

We show what we could not verify, and missing information stays missing. We do not estimate a value to fill a gap. When a finding appears to conflict with a category rule, we record the claim, source, applicability and limitation for editorial review. An open review is visible on the product page; it does not silently change the published verdict.

When products change

Manufacturers change formulations, suppliers and packaging without notice. Findings describe the specific products and dates we examined. Each page shows when we last reviewed it and, where we have one, when the version was last verified. When we cannot confirm that a result applies to the product on sale today, the verification notes say so.

Corrections

If you think something on this site is wrong, email contact@theverdictlist.com with the page and, if you can, a source. When we verify an error we correct the page and update its review date. We do not change a verdict because a brand or a reader asks. We change it when the evidence changes.

Affiliate links and independence

A verdict is decided before anyone checks whether a product has an affiliate program. Some links on this site earn a commission at no extra cost to you. Links are never added to products with an avoid verdict, and a product without a link is not ranked lower for it. The affiliate disclosure explains how links and prices work.
