What’s the safest infant car seat? Here’s Our Verdict

Britax Willow S

Installation: Limited$$

Quick verdict

Verdict
Caution
Evidence
Strong

BabyGearLab measured low head and chest forces, but Consumer Reports found its lockoff indicator often shows green when the lockoff isn't fully closed.

Caution
  • CR: "Lockoff indicator often mistakenly green", which can hide an incomplete installation.
  • CR ranks it 32nd of 46 (overall score 61), with belt fit 3/5.
Good
  • BabyGearLab (2025): one of the few seats with low readings at both the head and chest sensors.
  • Consumer Reports: Better crash protection, with excellent labels and instructions.

What we could not verify

  • No chemical test located.
Why we reached this verdict

The Willow S has good crash evidence: BabyGearLab's February 2025 test put it among the few seats with low readings at both the head and chest sensors, and Consumer Reports rates its crash protection Better. The concern is installation. CR found the ClickTight lockoff "clunky and difficult to use" and says its indicator "is often green even when not fully locked", which can tell a parent an installation is finished when it isn't. CR's overall score is 61, 32nd of 46 infant seats.

We moved it from Recommended to Caution for that documented misuse risk. The earlier page also said Consumer Reports had not tested this seat, which was wrong. If you use one, confirm by hand that the lockoff is fully closed rather than trusting the indicator. Britax states the fabric is naturally flame-retardant with no added FR chemicals; PFAS is not addressed.

Evidence at a glance

Independent crash evidenceCR crash protection Better; BabyGearLab low head and chest readings. Evidence grade A: Two independent programs (Consumer Reports and BabyGearLab) crash tested this model, and the tested units match what is sold now.
Installation and misuse resilienceLimited. CR documents a lockoff indicator that is "often mistakenly green" when the lockoff is not fully closed, plus belt fit 3/5; BabyGearLab install 7.0 LATCH, 7.5 belt. A documented misuse risk: fit-to-vehicle of 2/5 or 3/5 across methods, a misleading indicator, or installation metrics near the bottom of a lab's range.

Independent crash tests

Consumer Reports and BabyGearLab run their own crash tests with different equipment, methods and scales. Neither publishes raw measurements, so we report each result in the lab's own terms and never combine them. Passing the federal standard is required of every seat and is not a comparative result.

Consumer Reports notes: “The Willow is Britax's first infant seat with their ClickTight technology for tensioning. However, unlike in their other car seat categories, the Willow's ClickTight mechanism is clunky and difficult to use. The indicator for the lockoff can be easily misleading as it is often green even when not fully locked.”

Strengths the lab lists

  • “Excellent labels and instructions”
  • “Handle can be in any locked position during travel”
  • “Push-on LATCH connectors”

Weaknesses the lab lists

  • “Lockoff operation is clunky and difficult to route”
  • “Base may have too much overhang off vehicle seat in some vehicle positions”
  • “Lockoff indicator often mistakenly green”

Federal compliance and recalls

Every seat sold in the US must meet FMVSS 213. The side-impact requirement, FMVSS 213a, applies from December 5, 2026. The manufacturer states: “Side-impact tested according to FMVSS 213a and meets FMVSS 213 frontal impact standards”. Manufacturer statement; we did not verify certification.

No recall of this seat was located in NHTSA's recall data (searched September 23, 2026).

Check your own seat by its model number and manufacture date at nhtsa.gov/recalls, and register it with the manufacturer so recall notices reach you.

Materials and chemical claims

  • “Naturally flame-retardant with no added FR chemicals” (Britax, manufacturer statement)

Flame-retardant claim only; PFAS is not addressed.

“Free of added flame retardants” means the manufacturer says none were added on purpose. It is not a lab result showing none are present, and no seat on this page has published independent chemical testing.

How this verdict changed

Before the September 23, 2026 re-audit: Recommended, evidence grade A-. Now: Caution, evidence grade A.

Changed from Recommended to Caution. The prior page said Consumer Reports had not tested this seat; it has, ranking it 32nd of 46 and documenting a lockoff indicator that often shows green when the lockoff is not fully closed, a misuse risk. BabyGearLab's crash readings remain good.

What would change our verdict

  • A Britax change to the lockoff indicator, confirmed by independent testing.

What we still don't know

  • No chemical test located.
