  • Installation grade: Moderate. CR fit 5/5 for LATCH and belt and calls it one of the easiest seats to install; BabyGearLab scored belt installation 4.0/10. The two labs disagree. Added in this re-audit: Chicco's current flagship KeyFit (the KeyFit 35 no longer appears on Chicco's listing), tested by both labs, the most recent by BabyGearLab in January 2026. Consumer Reports: Chicco KeyFit Max (match: current). Chicco sells the KeyFit Max only in ClearTex and ClearLux fabrics; CR's listing does not name the trim. Recline indicator not labeled BabyGearLab: Chicco KeyFit Max ClearTex (match: current).

Why we reached this verdict

New to this page. The KeyFit 35 no longer appears on Chicco's infant car seat listing and the KeyFit Max does; it adds an anti-rebound bar, a steel-reinforced belt lock-off and six recline positions to the KeyFit design. Consumer Reports rates its crash protection Better (overall score 80, 14th of 46) and calls it "one of the easiest seats to securely install using either LATCH or the vehicle belt."

BabyGearLab's January 2026 test was less enthusiastic: sensor readings were "largely average", and it scored belt installation 4.0 out of 10. Because the labs disagree, we rate the installation evidence Moderate. Chicco states the fabric is flame-retardant-free and GREENGUARD Gold certified, but unlike its KeyFit and KeyFit 30 ClearTex pages, the Max page says nothing about PFAS.

Independent crash tests

Consumer Reports and BabyGearLab run their own crash tests with different equipment, methods and scales. Neither publishes raw measurements, so we report each result in the lab's own terms and never combine them. Passing the federal standard is required of every seat and is not a comparative result.

Federal compliance and recalls

Every seat sold in the US must meet FMVSS 213. The side-impact requirement, FMVSS 213a, applies from December 5, 2026. The manufacturer states: “meets or exceeds Side Impact Standard FMVSS 213a for harnessed modes”. Manufacturer statement; we did not verify certification.

No recall of this seat was located in NHTSA's recall data (searched September 23, 2026).

Check your own seat by its model number and manufacture date at nhtsa.gov/recalls, and register it with the manufacturer so recall notices reach you.

Materials and chemical claims

  • “ClearTex flame retardant-free materials” (Chicco, manufacturer statement)

Certifications claimed: GREENGUARD Gold (manufacturer-stated). GREENGUARD Gold limits chemical emissions (VOCs) into indoor air. It does not test for flame retardants or PFAS, and it says nothing about crash performance. We could not confirm this claim in UL's certification database, which blocks automated checks.

The KeyFit Max page states flame-retardant-free materials but, unlike Chicco's KeyFit and KeyFit 30 ClearTex pages, does not mention PFAS.

“Free of added flame retardants” means the manufacturer says none were added on purpose. It is not a lab result showing none are present, and no seat on this page has published independent chemical testing.

How this verdict changed

Added in the September 23, 2026 re-audit.

Added in this re-audit: Chicco's current flagship KeyFit (the KeyFit 35 no longer appears on Chicco's listing), tested by both labs, the most recent by BabyGearLab in January 2026.

What would change our verdict

  • Resolution of the belt-installation disagreement by further testing.
  • A PFAS statement or test for the Max's ClearTex fabric.

What we still don't know

  • No chemical test located, and the Max page does not address PFAS.
  • The labs disagree on belt installation.
