What small appliances are safe? Here’s Our Verdict

A stainless exterior is irrelevant if the food touches a coated aluminum pot.

Read the category introduction

A stainless exterior is irrelevant if the food touches a coated aluminum pot. We look at the vessel, basket, rack, blade, lid and seal, and we say so when no ideal coating-free product has been identified.

Our standard for small appliances

We assess every surface food touches, including vessels, baskets, blades, lids, seals and coatings. A stainless exterior does not establish an uncoated food-contact path; unresolved choices stay explicit.

Read the full category standard

Material first, product second. For each cooking job we ask which food-contact material performs best and what its trade-offs are, and only then which exact product uses that material well.

What touches the food controls the verdict. A stainless exterior, a marketing word or a brand name says nothing about the surface food contacts. Coating, finish and seasoning are named for every product.

Hazard, exposure and risk are kept apart. A substance can be hazardous in principle, may or may not migrate from a given product, and may or may not matter at realistic use. We report each separately and do not turn a hazard into proof of harm, or an absence of evidence into proof of safety.

Evidence, not vocabulary. “Manufacturer states” is a claim, not a finding. A result that is not detected means not detected above the method's reporting limit, never “contains none”. We do not write “chemical-free”, “100% safe” or “completely non-toxic”.

Exact identity is mandatory. Sets and families with similar names differ. Each product is recorded by exact SKU and model; where an exact SKU, size or construction is not confirmed, the product is marked Conditional with “confirm the exact SKU” as the stated condition.

We re-checked the research. Every product was checked against its manufacturer or retailer page on 2026-09-25. Where that check changed a fact, the product page says what the earlier research had said. Products we added ourselves are labeled.

Price and links never change a verdict. Prices are observed on a dated check and change often. A product with an Amazon link shows a relative price tier instead of a dollar price ($ is under $100, $$ is $100 to $300 and $$$ is over $300). Some products on this page have affiliate links, added only after the verdict. A product without a link is not ranked lower for it.

Small appliance standard. The first question is what actually touches the food: cooking vessel, basket, rack, pan, interior cavity, blade, lid, gasket, seal, paddle, coating and removable vessel. A stainless exterior means nothing if food touches PTFE-coated aluminum inside. Where no ideal coating-free product has been identified, we say so rather than name a winner.

Best pick or best value

Food-contact construction confirmed for the exact SKU. Listed in research order, not ranked.

Food contact: Stainless steelNo applied coating

A rice cooker where the inner pot, lid and steamer tray are all stainless steel, per Tatung.

Good
  • SUS304 stainless inner pot, lid and steamer rack.
  • No coating stated on any food-contact part.
Caution
  • Only the TAC-06KN was verified; the TAC-6GS variant was not.
  • Price was not captured.

Our research gives no product-specific reason beyond food-contact construction, so performance claims are not established here.

Food contact: Cast ironNo applied coating

A manual stovetop cast-iron waffle maker with seasoning instead of a permanent nonstick coating.

Good
  • Seasoned cast iron with no synthetic coating.
  • Exact SKU and price confirmed.
Caution
  • Manual stovetop use; less convenient than electric.
  • Heavy, and needs seasoning care.

Our research gives no product-specific reason beyond food-contact construction, so performance claims are not established here.

Conditional: confirm the exact SKU

The material choice fits the research, so this is our estimate. The exact SKU, size, accessory surfaces or a manufacturer claim still needs to be confirmed before buying.

Food contact: Stainless steelNo applied coating

A stainless inner-pot option for pressure multicookers; check that it fits your exact model.

Caution
  • Exact appliance compatibility must be verified.
  • Lid and sealing ring were not characterized.
Good
  • 304 (18/8) stainless inner pot with no coating.

Confirm the exact SKU, size and current construction details before relying on this pick.

Conditional: other conditions

A useful option with a stated condition: availability, an unresolved formulation, a coating, or a specialty exception.

Food contact: Stainless steelNo applied coating

A stainless blender container that cuts plastic food contact, but its lid is still plastic and it needs a Vitamix base.

Caution
  • The lid is Tritan plastic.
  • It needs a full-size Vitamix base; the container is an extra purchase.
Good
  • Stainless container and blades.
  • Dishwasher safe; fits full-size Vitamix blenders.

Confirm the exact SKU, size and current construction details before relying on this pick.

Food contact: Ceramic nonstickHas a coating or release layer

The only bread machine we found that states its pan coating is PFAS-free; still a wear-dependent ceramic coating.

Caution
  • A ceramic coating wears over time.
  • Coating composition and lab reports are not public.
Good
  • Zojirushi states the food-contact areas are free of PFAS and BPA.

Formulation verification required: the coating composition and original lab reports are not public.

What touches the food

This table records only what the research established. “Not characterized” means the research did not establish that part, not that it is fine.

Lids, seals, gaskets, baskets, racks, blades and paddles are not characterized unless named in the food-contact material. Check each against the current manual before buying.

Where no ideal product has been identified

NO IDEAL COATING-FREE PRODUCT IDENTIFIED for these appliance types, because the research has not identified a product whose food-contact surfaces are all simple and disclosed:

  • Air fryers and toaster ovens (the Cuisinart TOA-95NAS was withdrawn: its manual describes a non-stick interior while retail listings say stainless)
  • Bread machines (the only current model we found with a PFAS-free coating statement is the Zojirushi BB-PPC20, a ceramic nonstick pan)
  • Electric griddles, countertop grills and sandwich presses
  • Food processors and blenders
  • Slow cookers
  • Electric waffle makers

We will not recommend a mediocre product just because every category needs a winner.

Small appliances at a glance

A product with an affiliate link shows a relative price tier ($, $$ or $$$) instead of a price. For the rest, prices are observed on the research date and are not a signal of quality.

Frequently asked questions

How do I know what touches my food in an appliance?
Check the inner pot, basket, rack, blade, lid and seal for each model. The manufacturer’s manual or product page usually lists them, and accessories can differ from the main vessel.
Is a stainless-steel appliance free of coatings?
Not necessarily. The exterior material says nothing about the food-contact surface.
Why no recommendation for a bread machine or air fryer?
We have not identified an ideal coating-free product for either, so we do not name one. We withdrew a Cuisinart toaster oven air fryer after finding its manual describes a non-stick interior.

What we haven't checked yet

  • The Tatung rice cooker is the best-documented appliance (stainless inner pot, lid and steamer rack per Tatung). The Instant Pot inner pot is a platform, and the waffle maker is a manual cast-iron tool. Lids, seals and gaskets were not characterized for any of them.
  • Cuisinart TOA-95NAS was withdrawn because its own manual (TOA-95) describes a non-stick interior; it can return if the exact unit’s interior and accessories are confirmed from the manufacturer.
  • No verified coating-free product for air fryers, toaster ovens, food processors (the Cuisinart Custom 14 has a BPA-free plastic work bowl), slow cookers, bread machines, electric griddles, countertop grills, sandwich presses or electric waffle makers. Where a ceramic-coated appliance exists it is still a wear-dependent coating.
  • The Vitamix container’s lid is Tritan plastic, and it needs a Vitamix base; the motor base was not assessed.
  • The Instant Pot entry describes a stainless inner pot platform, not a single verified appliance SKU.
