What it is

Optical brighteners — also called fluorescent whitening agents (FWAs) or fluorescent brightening agents (FBAs) — are synthetic, dye-like compounds added to laundry detergent, paper, and textiles to make white and light-colored items look brighter and less yellow. They don't clean or bleach anything; they work by absorbing invisible ultraviolet light and re-emitting it as visible blue light, which optically cancels out the yellowish tint that naturally builds up in aged fabric, paper, and plastic. That's why a detergent containing brighteners can make a faded white T-shirt look "whiter than white" even on a wash that didn't actually remove any extra dirt. They've been standard in mainstream powder and liquid detergents, copy and printer paper, and white textiles since the mid-20th century, and they turn up in some "brightening" cosmetics and hair products as well. One quirk that reveals how they work: brighteners are deliberately left out of banknote paper, because their presence (or absence) under UV light is one of the things used to spot counterfeits. In the US, the FDA even permits one specific optical brightener in adhesives used on food-contact labels for raw fruit and vegetables, capped at 0.05% of the finished adhesive.

Why it's flagged

The record on optical brighteners centers less on acute human toxicity — which testing has generally found to be low — and more on what they don't do, and what happens after they wash down the drain. Functionally, they're an optical trick rather than a cleaning agent: the "whiter wash" a consumer sees is fluorescence, not soil removal, so whiteness isn't a valid stand-in for how well a detergent actually cleans. Environmentally, an OECD Screening Information Data Set assessment of the widely used stilbene-type brightener FWA-1 (CAS 16090-02-1, a bis-triazinylaminostilbene compound — not to be confused with the chemically distinct brightener disodium distyrylbiphenyl disulfonate, DSBP) found low acute toxicity to fish and Daphnia, but a 2018 Danish EPA review of optical brightening agents in textiles found measurable chronic toxicity to Daphnia (NOEC/EC10 in roughly the 1–10 mg/L range) and confirmed these compounds are poorly biodegradable — they pass largely intact through conventional wastewater treatment and persist in rivers and lakes, where sunlight rather than microbial breakdown is the main way they eventually degrade. A 2024 peer-reviewed study in the journal Toxics tested three common brighteners (DAST, FB-71, FB-28) on the nematode C. elegans and found low lethality but significant reductions in growth, movement, and reproduction, plus oxidative-stress gene activation — a signal worth tracking, though it's an invertebrate model, not direct evidence of harm to people. On skin contact, that same Danish EPA review concluded the benzoxazole- and stilbene-based brighteners it evaluated were not skin sensitizers in standard testing, even though anecdotal consumer reports of rashes or irritation from brightener-treated fabric — especially in people with eczema or very sensitive skin — persist alongside that official finding.

How concerned to be

This lands as caution, not avoid, and the reasoning is specific rather than reflexive. At the doses people actually encounter from washed laundry or printed paper, acute toxicity is low, and no major body (FDA, ECHA, IARC) is known to have classified optical brighteners as carcinogens based on currently available reviews, while the EU Detergents Regulation (EC 648/2004) treats them as a labeling issue — brighteners must appear on the ingredient list regardless of concentration — rather than a substance to restrict outright. Where the caution comes in is twofold. First, environmentally: because they're persistent and poorly biodegradable, brighteners are exactly the kind of ingredient that ends up in waterways after every wash cycle, which is why the EU Ecolabel and Nordic Swan Ecolabel both exclude them from certified "green" detergent formulations — if minimizing aquatic impact matters to you, that's a legitimate, evidence-backed reason to pick a brightener-free product. Second, for skin: official sensitization testing says brighteners aren't allergens, but real-world irritation reports in eczema-prone people and infants are common enough that choosing "optical brightener-free" or "dye-free" detergent for baby laundry and cloth diapers is a reasonable precaution, even without a formal recall or restriction behind it. And independent of either risk axis, treat "whiter" laundry as a marketing signal rather than a cleaning one — a brightener-heavy detergent can look like it's working harder without actually removing more soil, which is the core reason this ingredient belongs in a "not what it appears" category rather than a functional one.
